The lake
About Big Crooked Lake
Big Crooked Lake is one of the Sister Lakes, the cluster northwest of Dowagiac, and at around 110 acres running to about 48 feet it is small and genuinely deep rather than small and shallow. That combination is less common than people assume and it shows up in what homes sell for.
This is the furthest southwest of the lakes tracked here, which puts it in a different orbit from the Kalamazoo and Barry County lakes — closer to the Indiana line, and historically a summer destination for Chicago and South Bend as much as for anywhere in Michigan. A good share of the housing stock started as seasonal and has been converted since.
