Kalamazoo
Urban core with tree-lined streets and a dense downtown laid out on a walkable grid. Housing runs from century-old homes near the center to postwar ranches and newer infill. Home to Western Michigan University and served by Kalamazoo Public Schools.
Portage
Planned community directly south of Kalamazoo, with an extensive parks and trail system, newer subdivisions, and shopping concentrated along Westnedge. Immediate access to I-94 and US-131. Served by Portage Public Schools.
Plainwell
Historic downtown of locally-owned storefronts on the Kalamazoo River, about 20 minutes north of Kalamazoo on US-131. Mostly older housing stock. Served by Plainwell Community Schools.
Otsego
Smaller city on the Kalamazoo River in Allegan County, with larger lots and more acreage than the Kalamazoo-area communities. Served by Otsego Public Schools.
Richland (Gull Lake)
Village in Kalamazoo County built around Gull Lake, one of the largest inland lakes in Southwest Michigan. The housing mixes true lake frontage with homes carrying deeded or association access to a shared shore. Served by Gull Lake Community Schools.
Texas Corners
Unincorporated community in Texas Township on the western edge of Kalamazoo County, where most of the area's newer construction and larger platted lots are going in. Listings file under Texas Township in the MLS.
Allegan
County seat of Allegan County, on the Kalamazoo River, with a historic downtown and riverfront parks. About half an hour from Kalamazoo. Served by Allegan Public Schools.
Battle Creek
The largest city in Calhoun County, at the confluence of the Kalamazoo and Battle Creek rivers. Home to Kellogg's since 1906 and to a large municipal parks system. Served by Battle Creek Public Schools.
